The Goods and Services Tax (GST) has drastically changed India’s taxation system while aiming to simplify the process and encourage compliances. However, the impact of the same on the healthcare sector reveals challenges that require immediate attention. Despite healthcare services being largely exempt from GST, healthcare providers face mounting operational costs due to the embedded nature of taxes and limited availability of input tax credit in this respect. Rationalising GST rates across the sector therefore is essential to address these issues and ensure affordability while fostering sectoral growth.
One of the primary challenges concerning the healthcare sector today is the embedded tax on input goods and services as part of GST, which disproportionately affects the healthcare providers in the country. As per a study conducted by global consultant EY, hospitals incur embedded taxes amounting to as much as 6 percent of their turnover, significantly higher than the 4.3 percent pre-GST burden.
This increase stems from the inability to claim tax credits on essentials like medical equipment(s), medical devices as well diagnostic tools which are taxed at rates of 12% to 18%, a cost that hospitals must either absorb or pass on to their patients.

AI holds huge promise for healthcare, but not just on the medical side; many startups are convinced machine learning-based systems can do a lot of good on adjacent tasks such as appointment scheduling and confirmations.
Brazilian startup Carecode is among these AI believers. It’s coming out of stealth with an ambition to reduce healthcare costs and improve medical outcomes by developing AI agents that focus on tasks that happen before and after a medical appointment — and would typically be run by a call center.
“We tend to think that only the moment with the doctor is what matters, but after having spent 10 years in healthcare I realized that those moments [around the appointment] are as important as the medical encounter,” CEO Thomaz Srougi (pictured right in the above image) told TechCrunch.
Srougi comes from a family of doctors, but he’s not one himself; his firsthand knowledge of healthcare comes from founding Dr. Consulta, a private medical service provider scaleup that’s raised some $168 million in funding, and where he remains chairman.
Carecode is still early in its fundraising journey, but already has an impressive cap table: Its $4.3 million pre-seed round was mostly funded by a16z and QED, with participation from Endeavor Catalyst, K50 Ventures, and Latitud Ventures, as well as high-profile figures from Brazil’s tech scene, including Nubank founder David Vélez.

Fortis Bengaluru Hits 1,000 Robot-Aided Urological Procedures Milestone:
Bengaluru, has reached an impressive milestone by performing over 1000 Robot-aided surgeries using the Da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System at Bannerghatta Road highlighting the hospital’s expertise and commitment to advanced surgical techniques. This accomplishment not only underscores the hospital’s capabilities but also its role in leading the adoption of cutting-edge technology in urology. In addition, the introduction of the Da Vinci X system at Fortis Cunningham Road signifies the hospital’s ongoing investment in expanding access to state-of-the-art surgical options. Fortis Hospital, Bengaluru is at the forefront of integrating robotic technology into their surgical practices, which has led to improved patient outcomes, shorter recovery times, and increased precision in complex procedures.
The Urology Team led by Dr. Mohan Keshavamurthy, has successfully performed more than 1,000 robotic surgeries over the past 79 months, since the installation of the Da Vinci surgical system at Fortis Bannerghatta Road in 2018. These surgeries span a broad range of complex procedures across Uro-Oncology, Uro-Gynaecology, Reconstructive Urology, and Kidney Transplantation. The surgeries conducted via Da Vinci Xi Robot include 92 Robotic Kidney Transplants, 398 Nerve-Sparing Robotic Radical Prostatectomies, 282 Robotic Complex Partial Nephrectomies and 54 Pediatric Robotic Procedures, amongst others.
One such case is that of Patient Amar (name changed), a 50-year-old man who underwent multiple procedures in his hometown Kolkata, for a stone in the Ureter. During the surgical procedure, there were intra-operative complications that led to a traumatic injury to the ureter. A surgical procedure to examine the abdominal cavity was performed, however the ureter could not be repaired. As a result of the injured ureter, a tube was inserted to drain urine from the kidney (Nephrostomy). These complications led to recurrent urinary tract infections in the patient, requiring multiple ICU admissions. The patient was eventually airlifted from Kolkata to Fortis Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, where doctors successfully performed robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery to repair the ureteric injury.
