What Are Gallstones?
Gallstones are small, hardened deposits that form inside the gallbladder — a small organ located beneath the liver that stores bile, a fluid that helps digest fats. These stones can vary in size and may form when there’s too much cholesterol or waste in the bile, or if the gallbladder doesn’t empty properly. Gallstones are more common in women, people over 40, those with obesity, or individuals with a family history of gallbladder disease. Fortunately, they can often be managed with lifestyle changes or, in severe cases, through surgical removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy).
